FOR PROVIDERS

Legal & Immigration

Refugee and other newcomer children, youth, and families arrive in the U.S. through different immigration pathways. While non-legal service providers should never provide legal advice or guidance on immigration matters*, having a basic understanding of immigration processes and the legal rights of newcomers can help providers offer more informed support.

The resources in this section provide information on:

  • Common immigration pathways for refugees and other newcomer populations eligible for services through the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR)
  • Different types of legal relief that may be available to some newcomers
  • Public benefits and services that may be available to some newcomers
  • Legal rights and protections available to newcomer populations, regardless of legal status
  • Nation-wide, low-cost or pro bono legal support

*Providers should always refer newcomer families to qualified attorneys or Department of Justice (DOJ) accredited representatives to provide legal advice and guidance.
