The Venezuelan economy collapsed in 2014 as a result of falling global oil prices, hyperinflation, supply shortages, and government mismanagement. Over 90% of the population lives in poverty lacking basic necessities. In 2017, severe malnutrition affected children under five. These conditions have forced many Venezuelans to flee their country. 

According to UNHCR data from 2025, Venezuelans make up the largest population of refugees globally, totaling 6.5 million. 

Over the last decade, close to 17,000 Venezuela refugees have been admitted through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program and over 28,000 were granted asylum. Over 117,000 Venezuelans were granted parole  between October 2022 and December 2024 with the support of U.S.-based sponsors.
