Beginning in February 2022, war between Russia and Ukraine broke out, leading many Ukrainians to flee their homeland. As of October 2025, there are over 5.1 million Ukrainian refugees globally and another 3.7 million internally displaced, the majority of whom are women and children. 

The United States has provided protection and support to Ukrainians through several humanitarian pathways. Under the Uniting for Ukraine program, Ukrainians were able to enter the United States through humanitarian parole with the support of a U.S. based sponsor. Until the beginning of 2025, approximately 651,000 Ukrainians were paroled into the U.S. through this program. Over the last decade, over 22,000 Ukrainians have been resettled through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program and another 2,700 have been granted asylum.
