FOR PROVIDERS

Facilitating Access to Mental Health & Psychosocial Support

Talking with refugee children and youth about mental health and recognizing when additional support may be needed can feel challenging, especially for providers who are not mental health specialists. Cultural beliefs, stigma, language differences, and limited familiarity with mental health systems in the United States may make newcomer youth and families hesitant to discuss emotional concerns openly. Having a basic understanding of how to approach mental health conversations, use simple screening tools, and respond to concerns in a supportive way can help providers feel more confident in these situations. By learning how to navigate these discussions and connect families to appropriate services when needed, providers can play an important role in promoting early support and improving mental health outcomes for refugee youth.
