Educational Supports for Students Experiencing Homelessness
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law that protects the educational rights of children and youth experiencing homelessness, including those temporarily sharing housing due to financial hardship or housing instability.
Eligible students have the right to immediate school enrollment, transportation support, free school meals, academic assistance, fee waivers, and referrals to community services. Public school districts must also designate a local homeless education liaison to help families and youth access services and address enrollment barriers.
The National Center for Homeless Education (NCHE) provides helpful resources for providers, families, and educators on educational supports for children and youth experiencing homelessness.
